Project Objectives:

Demonstrate the ability to analyze airport baggage handling processes and identify opportunities to improve baggage visibility, tracking accuracy, operational efficiency, and passenger experience.

Apply logistics, airport operations, IoT, data analytics, and digital tracking principles to develop a smart baggage management approach covering baggage check-in, sorting, loading, transfer, arrival, and collection.

Exhibit strategic planning and decision-making competencies by designing a baggage monitoring framework aligned with airport operational requirements, airline processes, security standards, passenger expectations, and service-level objectives.

Evaluate baggage handling performance using key metrics such as baggage processing time, tracking accuracy, mishandling rate, delayed baggage incidents, transfer success rate, baggage recovery time, and passenger service performance.

Utilize IoT concepts, RFID or barcode-based identification, tracking databases, dashboards, APIs, spreadsheets, or analytics platforms to monitor baggage movement and provide real-time or near-real-time visibility across operational stages.

Enhance problem-solving and adaptability by addressing baggage-related challenges such as misrouting, delayed transfers, lost baggage, damaged luggage, system failures, flight disruptions, peak passenger volumes, and tracking-data gaps.

Showcase teamwork and collaboration skills by coordinating baggage management activities among airport operators, airlines, ground handling teams, security personnel, baggage service teams, IT teams, and other operational stakeholders.

Cultivate secure, reliable, and passenger-centric technology practices by emphasizing data accuracy, system availability, controlled access, operational safety, privacy, traceability, and continuous improvement throughout the baggage management process.

Project Tasks:

Conduct an assessment of a hypothetical airport's existing baggage handling process to map baggage movement from check-in through sorting, loading, transfer, arrival, and final passenger collection.

Develop a smart baggage tracking framework using technologies such as RFID, barcode scanning, IoT sensors, automated identification, databases, and digital tracking systems to provide visibility at key baggage handling checkpoints.

Design a detailed baggage data-flow architecture demonstrating how tracking information is captured, transmitted, stored, monitored, and shared among airport, airline, ground handling, and baggage service teams.

Create a mock baggage monitoring dashboard using spreadsheets, database tools, or analytics platforms to track baggage status, location checkpoints, processing times, transfer activity, exceptions, and delayed or missing baggage cases.

Simulate baggage handling scenarios involving incorrect routing, missed connections, delayed flights, damaged baggage, system outages, peak travel volumes, and baggage tracking failures to develop appropriate response and recovery procedures.

Analyze hypothetical baggage data to calculate key performance indicators such as average processing time, baggage tracking accuracy, mishandling rate, transfer success rate, delayed baggage percentage, and recovery time.

Evaluate the operational and passenger-service impact of the proposed smart baggage monitoring platform and identify opportunities to reduce baggage delays, improve handling efficiency, strengthen visibility, and enhance customer satisfaction.

Compile a final project report that includes the baggage process assessment, smart tracking framework, technology architecture, monitoring dashboard, simulated results, operational challenges, lessons learned, and recommendations for implementing a scalable smart baggage monitoring and tracking platform for airports.
